Welcome....
Wooler
First School is situated in the remote northern part of England
on the edge of the beautiful Northumberland National Park. To
the north lies the Scottish Border Region. To the east, lying
just off our magnificent 'Heritage Coastline', is the Holy Island
of Lindisfarne. The Cheviot Hills are within walking distance
from the school gates. They are a haven for hillwalkers and
nature lovers from all over the world. Some of our nearest towns
include Alnwick (the location for the 'Harry Potter' films)
and the border fortress town of Berwick-upon-Tweed.
The
market town of Wooler
has a population of about 2000. People come from the remote
outlying farms to do their shopping. The dominant industries
are sheep farming and tourism.
Wooler First School has 97 pupils between the ages of 4 and
9yrs. The pupils are lucky to enjoy good teaching and it is
a privilege for our teachers to have such good pupils. Success
in Key Stage 1 Sat results and Year 4 Optional SAT results is
one consequence of this, but we think it more important to be
able to offer an all-round education that will prepare the pupils
for the rest of their lives.
The
local firm, Lilburn Estates, sponsored the school’s Learning
Support Auxiliary for several years. This enabled the school to help those children
who are finding difficulty with their work through “a
carefully developed programme of support and withdrawal”
(Ofsted 2001).
Education
is a journey and not a destination. We hope that here at Wooler
we give to the children an education that they can use to the
benefit of the communities in which they will eventually live.
