New Pupil Guide

This section of the website tells you what your child will need to bring on his/her first day at school.
Before proceeding check to see whether or not your child is eligible to start:
The statutory dates for a child starting school in any academic year are as follows:

  • Children whose 5th birthdays occur between 1st September and 31st December (inclusive) start school in the September Term
  • Children whose 5th birthday occurs between 1st January and 31st March start school in the Spring Term
  • Children whose 5th birthday occurs between 1st April and 31st August start school in the Summer Term

However here at Wooler First School most children start school in the September of the academic year in which they are five. The school staggers the intake over a period of two or three weeks. The oldest children come in first and the younger ones later. If parents want their children to start school other than in September then they should let the headteacher know so that the necessary arrangements can be made.

If you feel that your child may not be able cope with a whole day at school then do discuss the matter with the Reception Class teacher who will be pleased to make arrangements which will be suitable for your child's individual needs.

School Clothing
The school colours are red, grey and white. We actively encourage children to come to school in clothing that is a combination of any of these three colours.
(It is possible to order sweat shirts/pants, pullovers and tee shirts from school).

PE Kit

All children should have a PE kit comprising shorts, vest/tee-shirt/football shirt, socks and plimsolls. Please do not let your child wear plimsolls that have black soles, as these tend to indelibly mark the hall floor. Girls may wear leotards for gymnastics lessons. All items should be named and kept in a named PE bag. Children are encouraged to wear gym shoes during PE lessons.

Art Clothing
All children must have in school some kind of protective covering for Art and Craft lessons - an apron, pinafore or old shirt (which is clearly named).

Footwear
Please send your child to school in sensible footwear! Shoes with raised heels and shoes with straps are not suitable for the rough and tumble of the playground.

Dinner Money
The school provides a daily two-course meal. Social training is an important aspect of the lunch period. Dinner money is paid on a weekly basis, every Monday morning, to the Kitchen staff.

Free Meals
Free meals forms are available and must be completed well in advance of your child starting school. If your financial circumstances change and you think that you may qualify for free meals then please do not hesitate to contact school for information. All enquiries will be treated in the strictest confidence.

Packed Lunches
Provision is made for children to bring packed lunches to school. Please make sure that your child’s name is on the box. Children are not permitted to bring nuts. Glass drink containers or hot drinks are not allowed.

Milk Money
Milk money is due to be paid at the end of the previous term. Free milk is provided only to pupils under 5 years for the whole of a particular term and for children on Free School Meals.

Swimming
All children go swimming each Tuesday. Parents are asked to make a voluntary contribution towards this activity.
On swimming day (Tuesday) your child will need swimming trunks, bathing hat (available through school) and towel. These should be clearly named and put in a bag that is also easily identified.
We also ask that the children wear a tracksuit in school colours on swimming day. If this is not possible they should wear normal school clothes.

A school tracksuit can be purchased through school. Please ensure that your child wears a coat in case it rains. In winter children will need to wear woolly hats or coats with hoods.
